Discovering The Mandarin Museum and Historical Society

For those interested in the history of the U.S. there can be very few states that can match Florida when it comes to providing as much entertainment and excitement of exploring the events that shaped the United States.

One of the most interesting destinations is located within the Mandarin neighborhood of Jacksonville, FL.  For those that want to delve deeper into the history of the state the Mandarin Museum and Historical Society is a great place to visit. It can be found on the banks of the St. Johns River.

It offers a fascinating insight into the history of the state and is something that the whole family can enjoy. For those that are interested in the Spanish colonial period and the early history of the United States, this museum is a must-see destination.

This Mandarin museum not only houses exhibits providing insight into some of the area’s most famous citizens but also offers magnificent gardens.

Those gardens feature shady Oak trees festooned with Spanish moss – and its 10-acres also feature some attractive picnicking spots which are ideal for families wanting to escape from city life.

It also offers a picturesque boardwalk which rewards a gentle stroll as the sun setting over the St John’s River provides a great backdrop and the opportunity to engage in some wonderful photography.

The museum itself has a great variety of exhibits, including one that explores the life and times of famed abolitionist and author Harriet Beecher Stowe, who had her winter home in Mandarin from 1867 to 1884.

Getting insight into the past glories of what was once a prime citrus growing area, served by a myriad of steamboats is made even more exciting by the restored 1875 farmhouse and the barn built in 1876 which can be found on the property.

Those interested in the civil war will find the exhibit that explains the events surrounding the sinking of the Union steamboat Maple Leaf which was sent to the bottom off Mandarin Point after striking a Confederate mine in 1864.

The Mandarin Museum and Historical Society also houses a wonderful collection of photographs of historical Jacksonville which those with an interest in old photographs are certain to enjoy.

With the museum also housing an impressive collection of old artifacts and some spectacular exhibits on the history of the Civil War, there is plenty of fascinating information that will appeal to history buffs and those that enjoy a good read.

Another attraction that will provide fascinating to students of history is the last remaining one-room schoolhouse in Duval County. Built in 1898, the schoolhouse was moved to the park in 2015.

It once served as a building devoted to the ongoing education of the black residents of Mandarin. It remains true to that legacy today. It now functions as an educational attraction that highlights the history of this particular schoolhouse and others that shaped the past and future of Mandarin locals.

The old schoolhouses also houses an exhibition with information on the French-Catholic sisters who played such a pivotal role in furthering the education of Africa-Americans in Mandarin.

The museum also houses a rotating exhibition featuring both modern and historic works that were (and still are) produced by those who live in the Mandarin area.

Around a mile down the road, visitors can also experience the restored Mandarin Store and Post Office. This building is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Finally closing its doors in 1964 it today provides a fascinating insight into the thriving Mandarin community of old.
